Repurposing an Old School

Located in Hamilton, Ontario - is a beautiful old school which was built in 1894 - Stinson School.  Currently, it is being renovated into condos.  Recently during "Doors Open", I went on a tour of the school.  It was fascinating. Of course, the developer is trying to keep as many architectural elements in tact as possible; the floorboards have not been replaced (incredibly creaky), exposed brick everywhere, staircases have bicycle rails that the children would have used (those are staying put).  The condos are quite expensive for the area, but I think it would be incredible to live in such an historic place! Just to think of all the children that would have passed through those classrooms and now are all dust.

  1. I drove by Stinson School yesterday and had to slow down to take a second look. It looks like they are sandblasting the old brick and the outside is starting to look amazing! I love how the city is starting to evolve in so many ways. So many great changes in the downtown core!

    1. Yes, the developer told me they are using an Eco-friendly citrus paste to dissolve and clean the years of grime off the building. I also love the re-definition of the city into an arts Mecca. Many Toronto friends have or are on their way to selling their homes and moving here - attracted to the low artists' studio rents.
